Price per watt is the number to compare

Two panels of different wattage cannot be compared on sticker price. Divide price by rated watts. In the current market, larger panels (450–650 W) are cheaper per watt than 100–300 W panels because they use the same frame, glass, junction box and shipping volume for more cells. A 100 W panel at ₦undefined–undefined/W costs up to NaN% more per watt than a 550 W panel at ₦undefined–undefined/W.

Per-watt cost also sets the ceiling on what an installer can fairly charge for an array: 10 × 550 W at ₦undefined–undefined/W is ₦1.15m–₦1.65m in panels alone. If a quotation's panel line is far above that, ask which brand and model, and check the datasheet.

Unbranded or relabelled panels sell below these ranges. The risk is not that they fail on day one but that their rated wattage is optimistic and their degradation faster; without a datasheet and a traceable manufacturer, a warranty is a promise from the shop, not the factory. Monocrystalline vs polycrystalline is no longer a real choice: almost every panel above 400 W is mono. The live decision is PERC vs TOPCon (a few percent more output per square metre and slower ageing for a small premium) and whether bifacial gain is realistic on your mounting surface.

Temperature matters more than brochures admit. Rated watts are measured at 25 °C cell temperature. A roof-mounted panel in Lagos or Kano runs at 55–65 °C at midday; with a typical temperature coefficient of −0.34%/°C that is a 10–14% loss at peak. The Global Solar Atlas figures used below already include this.

What a panel really produces, by city

A 550 W panel does not make 550 W × 5 hours = 2.75 kWh a day. The Global Solar Atlas models a fixed, optimally tilted array with typical losses (temperature, soiling, wiring, inverter) and reports long-term yield per installed kilowatt-peak. Multiply by panel size to get daily energy.

The southern cities lose a quarter of their output from July to September (cloud, rain, Harmattan haze arrives later in the north). How many panels does a home need?

Rule of thumb

Divide your daily energy use (kWh) by the worst-month yield for your city (kWh per kWp per day), add about 15% for battery charging losses, and divide by panel size in kW. A 12 kWh/day home in Lagos needs 12 ÷ 3.15 × 1.15 ≈ 4.4 kWp, which is 8 × 550 W panels. The same home in Kano needs 7.

A 550 W panel is about 2.28 m × 1.13 m (2.6 m²). With walkways and edge clearance, allow about 3 m² per panel: ten panels need roughly 30 m² of unshaded roof facing south-ish or, in Nigeria's low latitudes, almost any direction at a shallow tilt. Optimum fixed tilt from the Global Solar Atlas is 7° in Lagos, 13° in Abuja and 16° in Kano; anything from 5° to 15° gives within a few percent of optimum, and 5° is the minimum for rain to wash off dust.

Corrugated aluminium and long-span roofs take standard rail-and-clamp mounting; concrete roofs use ballasted or bolted frames; older zinc sheets and rotten purlins need reinforcement before they take 20 kg per panel plus wind load. Ground mounts cost more in steel but make cleaning and bifacial gain easy.

Buying checklist

  1. Compare per watt, not per panel. Divide price by rated watts; anything far outside ₦167–350/W needs a reason.
  2. Ask for the exact model number and download the datasheet from the manufacturer's site. "Jinko 550 W" is not a model.
  3. Check the label on the back of the panel matches the datasheet (model, Voc, Isc, serial) before it goes on the roof.
  4. Confirm who honours the warranty: a manufacturer-authorised distributor in Nigeria, or just the shop.
  5. Match string voltage to the inverter: total Voc of a string must stay under the MPPT maximum on a cool morning, and Vmp above its minimum on a hot afternoon. See MPPT input windows.
  6. Inspect for micro-cracks and snail trails on delivery; reject panels with cracked glass, delaminated edges or bent frames.
  7. Do not let panel count be set by the package. Size from your load audit and your city's worst month (above).
  8. Budget for mounting, cable, breakers and labour; see installation costs.
Safety

Solar arrays produce lethal DC voltages in daylight and cannot be switched off at the panel. Battery banks can deliver thousands of amps into a short circuit. Installation, wiring, earthing and commissioning must be done by a qualified installer or licensed electrician to the manufacturer's instructions and the Nigerian Electrical Installation Standards (IEC 60364-based). Observed retail listings checked on 16 September 2026 put a 550 W monocrystalline panel at ₦115,000–₦165,000, about ₦undefined–undefined per watt depending on brand, warranty and seller. Delivery and mounting are extra.

How much is a 100 W solar panel?

About ₦20,000–₦35,000. Per watt that is expensive (₦undefined–undefined/W); small panels make sense only for small DC loads, not for house systems.

How many solar panels can power a 3-bedroom flat in Nigeria?

For a 12 kWh/day audit (fridge, freezer, fans, lights, TV, one inverter AC in the evening): about 8 × 550 W in Lagos or 7 in Kano, sized on the worst month with lithium storage. Without the AC, 8 kWh/day needs 6 panels in Lagos.

Which solar panel brand is best in Nigeria?

ZEUS does not rank brands. Is a monocrystalline panel better than polycrystalline?

Yes for any new installation: higher efficiency (20–22% vs 15–17%), lower price per watt today and less roof area per kW. Polycrystalline panels are old stock.

Why do solar panel prices change so often in Nigeria?

Panels are imported and priced in dollars; the naira moved from about ₦1,500/$ in 2024 to ₦1.326,3/$ (CBN, 14 September 2026). Duty is 0% and VAT is zero-rated, so the exchange rate and shipping dominate.

How long do solar panels last?

Manufacturers warrant about 85% of rated output after 25 years for PERC and 87% after 30 years for TOPCon. Real degradation in hot climates is 0.4–0.7% a year; the panel outlives two or three sets of batteries.
